Chapter 09 covers coffee, tea, maté and spices — including pepper, cardamom, chillies, turmeric, cumin and other condiments. Spice traders, tea and coffee sellers and food businesses bill using these codes.

The GST treatment here often turns on packaging. Many of these goods are exempt when sold loose but taxable at 5% when pre-packaged and labelled. This pre-packaged-vs-loose distinction is one of the most common sources of GST error in the food trade, so read the description column carefully.

Find your tea, coffee or spice product below and note whether the pre-packaged or loose entry applies to your sale.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is GST applicable on tea and spices?

Many spices and tea are exempt when sold loose but attract 5% GST when pre-packaged and labelled. The rate depends on how the product is packed and sold, not just what it is.

What does "pre-packaged and labelled" mean for GST?

It refers to goods packed in a predetermined quantity in the absence of the buyer and bearing the labelling required under legal-metrology rules. Such packs attract GST even when the loose product is exempt.

How many digits of the HSN code do I need to put on my invoice?

It depends on your aggregate annual turnover. Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore must quote at least a 4-digit HSN code (a 2-digit code is allowed for B2C supplies below the threshold), while those above ₹5 crore must quote a 6-digit code. Many businesses use the full 8-digit code to be safe. SAC codes for services follow the same digit logic.
