Pardeep Jha & Associates, Chartered Accountants · Rates as on July 2026

Chapters 72 and 73 together cover iron and steel and articles made from them — ingots, bars, rods, sheets, pipes and tubes, structures, wire, fasteners, containers and general steel hardware. Steel traders, fabricators, hardware dealers and construction suppliers bill using these codes.

Primary iron and steel and most steel articles attract 18% GST, with a limited set of items at 5%. Because this is a large, high-volume chapter for the construction and engineering trades, using the precise heading keeps your invoices and input-credit trail clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GST rate on TMT bars and steel?

Iron and steel bars, rods and most steel products are taxed at 18%. Confirm the exact figure from the rate column for your specific product.

Which HSN code applies to steel pipes?

Tubes and pipes of iron or steel fall under headings 7304 to 7306 in Chapter 73. Choose the sub-heading matching your pipe type and construction.

How many digits of the HSN code do I need to put on my invoice?

It depends on your aggregate annual turnover. Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore must quote at least a 4-digit HSN code (a 2-digit code is allowed for B2C supplies below the threshold), while those above ₹5 crore must quote a 6-digit code. Many businesses use the full 8-digit code to be safe. SAC codes for services follow the same digit logic.
